There are less than 1,600 giant panda bears surviving in the wild and the panda is one of the first species to be declared Endangered. Fortunately, their numbers have stabilized and are even slightly up due to conservation efforts. The new Panda Research Center is now located in Chengdu and yes, these pandas are captive.
